Super Bowl’s Sympathy for the Devil

Something wicked this way comes- in America’s Super Bowl? The most watched TV program in world and the crucible for the famed Super Bowl ads which, we are told, is  a pulse-point for pop culture and innovation. That bill of goods  may be the biggest marketing scam of them all.

During the Super Bowl, Mercedes Benz is introducing its new spokesperson-Lucifer or maybe just his chief yes man, Mr. Satan.

The Mercedes teaser shows a swirl of leaves entering a restaurant and the background music of  the old Stones song Sympathy for the Devil while promising that “something sinister is coming”.

This ” man of wealth and taste” supposedly drives a Mercedes so, of course, the cultural sheep of America may want to run right out and get one too. Seriously?

Let’s just put the old devil in a real cultural context okay? The last century was the worst disaster for human kind since the beginning recorded history. Two World wars, one cold war, genocide, mass murder of the citizens of Poland, Belgium, all the occupied Nazi territories, the Baltic States and the Ukraine, Russia, China, Cambodia, Rwanda, Central America as well, terrorism, and world wide abortion of our youngest citizens as well as the fight for the “right” to do so. It was quite the century for organized cruelty. Cruelty is the devil’s keynote, not heated leather seats and precision engineering.

We are supposed to have sympathy for this devil and try to drive the same cars and hang out in his favorite spots. The thing is, that the old devil and his cronies-whether found within us as dark spots in our own souls and psychologies, or outside of us in the very spirits of those who use their free will to rebel against the great law of love, spiritual evolution and brotherhood; do not like mankind. Divide and conquer tactics, coercion, manipulation, war, narcissism, malice and murder are among their favorite sports.

Interestingly, there is a story that fits this last century.  Pope Leo in the late 1800’s had a vision where he overheard the Lord and Lucifer disputing over mankind. For some reason, Lucifer was allowed this last century to take action. Esoteric lore has it that this was the devil’s final opportunity to change his position before the end of his rope of time was reached.

The Lord gave Pope Leo a gift to protect mankind from Lucifer and Satan’s acts. It is called the Pope’s Prayer and was recited in Mass for decades of this last century.  One version goes like this,

” Saint Michael, the Archangel, defend us in Armageddon. Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil; may God rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly host, by the power of God, bind the forces of Death and Hell, the false hierarchy of Antichrist, and all evil spirits who wander through the world for the ruin of souls, and remand them to the  Court of the Sacred Fire for their final judgement.

Cast out the dark ones and their darkness, the evil doers and their evil words and works, cause, effect, record and memory, into the lake of sacred fire prepared for the devil and his angels.” According to God’s holy will.

This prayer is very politically incorrect. But consider that invoking the Great Good, the Logos, the light, the Lord and the angels who are our friends may be the wisest choice when “something sinister is coming.”

It is wise to know who you are friends are. It could be helpful to know what car the devil prefers, at least you can keep your eye out for him. But remember, he was also called the “father of lies” so he may show up in a Subaru in disguise. Also, Sir Thomas More, the man for all seasons, said, “the devil, that proud spirit hateth to be mocked”, so don’t let him know you are laughing. Enjoy the Super Bowl America, but do wake up.
